An Interview With Karla Medina, Principal Designer For KM Swimwear

Posted by Daniel Hernandez on September 14, 2015 at 2:15 PM

It takes more than an inspiration to produce the unique. That’s what Cuban-born Boston resident Karla Medina set out to do when she launched KMswimwear, a label designed to enhance natural curves and to fit seamlessly with any woman’s body. The brand launched KM Kids at the beginning of 2015. An islander by nature, Karla has been relentless in pursuit of her vision - unique designs that blend with the ocean as beautifully as they flatter the wearer.

Freshness and contemporary lines are evident in each piece crafted by this avid swimmer and scuba diver. Each plays with shapes and a palette of colors inspired by corals and other features evocative of tropical waters.

Added into the mix is an unexpected and exclusive design detail: the UC, a patent pending, customizing element Karla has created to connect fabrics and artfully expose the body shape. Mixing and matching elements produces a playfully customized result for every woman. For real women. For real bodies.

The result is a ménage-de-trois of inspiration, flexibility, and practicality. Nothing is mundane in KMswimwear.

Meet Karla!

Please describe your work:

Freshness and contemporary lines are evident in each piece, each design has a subtle accent which makes the brand recognizable.

Years in business:

5 years

What you love the most about fashion:

Innovation

Describe your main inspiration behind your work:

Love for the ocean

Where would you like to be in 5 years?

Hopefully doing the same thing I’m currently doing just at a much larger scale. I want the business to grow and to become a national brand, is a very difficult industry to penetrate and even though I know is going to be a tough path I’m very much looking forward to reaching such goal within a five year period, it may take me more than 5 years but is something which I will continue to pursue.

10 years?

I look forward to the next ten years, besides the idea of making the brand a national success I would love for it to reach overseas. I truly believe hard work pays off and if I keep on focusing and working as much as I do I can only for a successful outcome. To me success is having a brand which brings enough profits which would allow me to have a useful and conscious charity while doing what I love. After all what’s the point of having a lot of money if you can’t help others with it. There is so much one needs in this life and there isn’t a greater reward or feeling than helping someone in need. Looking forward to the day I can put my money to such use.

What fashion designers do you admire the most?

Swimwear designer Lenny Niemeyer, she is a brazilian designer who has an impeccable ability and taste. Since I was a little girl I have loved her work, in my world when it comes to swimwear Lenny is the pinnacle of swimwear design.

Describe your target customer:

My target customer is the woman who loves herself, my swimsuits tend to be subtle, allowing the woman to make the swimsuit and not the other way around. A swimsuit without “soul” is just another piece of fabric, the woman makes the swimsuit stand out and this is why I keep my designs borderline.

Describe what gives your products value:

Freshness and contemporary lines are evident in each piece crafted. Each plays with shapes and a palette of colors inspired by corals and other features evocative of tropical waters. Added into the mix is an unexpected and exclusive design detail: the UC, a patent pending, customizing element created to connect fabrics and artfully expose the body shape. All of our products are designed and made in the USA from beginning to end.

What makes your work different?

From fabric design to using our customizing element (UC) in our swimsuits.

Are you affiliated with any charities?

We are currently meeting with a few charities so we can achieve a mutual successful partnership.
